ICAPE offers two types of workshops. We offer workshops for educators to help them improve their teaching skills. And, we offer workshops for multilingual students to help them improve their English language skills and achieve their academic goals.

Academic Literacies Workshops FOR ALL

The International Center for Academic and Professional English offers workshops on communication skills, cultural awareness and intercultural communication for students, faculty and staff. Workshops are free for Lehigh University students, faculty, and staff. Time Management

* Learn strategies to combat procrastination, principles behind time management, how to implement them into your course schedule, and resources that can help you manage your time.
 
Cultivating Campus Connections: Speed-Friending and Networking
September 12th 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm – EWFM 520

Facilitator: Teresa Cusumano & Jessica Harbaum

* Are you looking to make new friends and expand your social circle? Joining this speed-friending and networking workshop to do just that! By participating in these activities, you can meet new people and build valuable connections. Developing networking skills can also help you feel more connected on campus. It Takes Two: Working and Communicating Effectively with Your Multilingual TA
October 2nd 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm – Steps 101

Facilitator(s): Teresa Cusumano & Kiki Montufar 

* This workshop will focus on intercultural competence and strategies for building a positive relationship with your international teaching assistant (ITA). Students will discuss ways to strengthen intercultural communication skills, navigate miscommunications, and work more effectively with their multilingual TA. Communication is a two way process. Learning strategies to develop effective lines of communication, get the most out of office hours, and build a working rapport with their ITA, will help students and ITAs to forge more positive, supportive classroom relationships.
 
Oral Presentation Skills
October 9th 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm   Maginnes 101

Facilitator(s): Mark Ouellette

* This workshop addresses how you can plan and deliver an engaging oral presentation in person and on Zoom. The workshop particularly uses the analogy of a “bus tour guide” to help you get your audience “on the bus” in the beginning, interested “during the ride,” and safely “off the bus with a souvenir.”

 
Rhetoric in Video Games and Media: The Language of Analysis

October 25th 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm   EWFM 520 and Via Zoom

Facilitator(s): Jessica Harbaum & Mike O'Neill 

* Do you think video games carry a deeper message? Participants of this workshop will learn how to analyze all forms of media with a critical eye, and learn useful language strategies for writing or speaking about topics such as video games, social media, advertisements, and more. Participants of this workshop will walk away with a toolkit for analyzing media and presenting it academically.

International Teaching Assistant (ITA) and Topss Workshops

 

Culture of the US Classroom for ITAs  
August 22nd  3:30 pm - 5:00 pm – EWFM 625 

Facilitator(s): Mark Ouellette   

* Classroom cultural expectations on the part of students can differ from country to country. As a potential international teaching assistant (ITA), you may be asking some important questions. What do undergraduate students expect from me as an ITA from another country? What challenges might I face?  And how do I help students learn more actively? These are all questions that will be addressed from a cultural and linguistic perspective.
 
Communication Strategies for International TAs: the Self, Others, and the World
August 29th  12:30 pm – 1:30 pm – Via Zoom

Facilitator(s): Mike O’Neill & Jessica Harbaum   

* Listening is a two-way street. Both international teaching assistants and students need to make an effort to communicate clearly. International TAs should realize how pronunciation of key terms, use of nonverbal communication skills, and approaches for handling student questions all contribute towards clear communication. At the same time, undergraduate students should monitor their own speech so that they speak clearly and appropriately. Participants of this workshop will gain practical strategies they can use for clear communication, whether it be in the classroom, during office hours, or in meetings.

 

Handling, Responding, and Prompting Questions:  Language Skills and Compensatory Strategies for International TAs
October 3rd   3:30 – 4:30 pm  Via Zoom

Facilitator(s): Mike O’Neill

* This workshop will focus on four steps for handling student questions as well as the content of the response. Students who come to the workshop will practice the four steps. Additional strategies will be discussed. *This workshop is designed for current or prospective international teaching assistants who want to improve how they use terms from their academic field.
 
Pronunciation Brush-Up for ITAs
November 15th 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm   EWFM 520 & Via Zoom

Facilitator(s): Mike O’Neill & Jessica Harbaum

* The workshop will focus on some of the most common pronunciation challenges faced by multilingual speakers, such as syllable stress, sentence stress, and intonation. Attendees will be provided with practical strategies for classroom communication and materials for ongoing practice. This workshop is designed for current or prospective international teaching assistants who want to improve their English pronunciation.
 
Overview of the TOPSS for Teaching Assistants
November 15th 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm   Maginnes 270 & Via Zoom

Facilitator(s): Ashley Murphy

*  This workshop will provide a broad overview of the TOPSS test for teaching assistants and Lehigh’s Oral Proficiency Interview. Time allowing, attendees can practice and receive feedback.
