For Parents

Dear Lehigh Families:

Study abroad is among the most positive and rewarding experiences Lehigh students can have, and we at Lehigh take quite seriously the business of preparing students for the world. So when we think about international study, we don’t wonder whether students will go abroad, but rather, where, and in pursuit of what ends.

Each student has different motives and goals. High priorities for many students include the opportunity to see the theoretical come to life in a real-world context, earning academic credit toward their degree, developing valuable career skills, learning or perfecting a second (or third!) language, and engaging with people and cultures different from their own.  You may find, as families before you have, that study abroad is often a catalyst for personal growth and intellectual focus.

As parents, guardians, and families of Lehigh students, you can help your daughter or son to identify academic, personal, and professional goals for international study.  This process of cognitive rehearsal is a springboard for conversations students will have with their academic and study abroad advisors, and allows the Study Abroad Office to work collaboratively with students to identify programs which will help them meet their goals.

We know that your child’s well-being is important to you, and that in this time of an increased focus on safety and security, you may have questions about your student’s plans to study and travel abroad. Please contact us at any time; we are happy to talk with you about any issue, no matter how small.
