What is an REU, anyway?

REU stands for "Research Experiences for Undergraduates." REUs are PAID summer internships sponsored by the National Science Foundation. REUs are offered at more than 700 universities and research institutions across the country and last 6-10 weeks. There are REUs for pretty much every field of science. The structure varies from REU to REU, but the common theme is for students to attempt research in some sense, working under faculty or other researchers.

Look, I have to get a job for the summer. I don't have the time or money to do an REU.

An REU is a summer job. Every NSF-sponsored REU provides a stipend to every participant. Most REUs provide housing or funds toward housing, as well as an allowance for food expenses. Many REUs also provide some travel funding.

What is involved in an REU application?

Each REU Site has its own online application that may include:

  • Unofficial transcripts

  • Resume

  • Two strong letters of recommendation from college professors/former employers

  • Personal statement or essay questions - Usually 1 - 2 pages.
What’s the application deadline?

Most REU applications are due in February, but many have rolling admission, so it helps to submit your application as early as possible.

How do I get started?
  • Fill out the Fellowship Advising Interest Form. The Office of Fellowship Advising is a resource to help you through the REU application process.

  • Explore the NSF-REU database of available REU’s. Pick approximately four opportunities that interest you.

  • Make an appointment with your Fellowship Advisor to discuss your REU applications.
