Gilman Scholarship - Hong Kong
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (Gilman Program) enables eligible undergraduates to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. Gatski applied for this highly competitive opportunity with the support of the Lehigh’s Office of Fellowship Advising. Here’s what Gatski had to say about his Gilman experience a few weeks into his program.

Where are you for your Study Abroad Experience?
I am studying at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
What's the most memorable part of your experience so far?
While I have only been here a few weeks, a memorable moment has been watching the sunset from Ma On Shan peak.
What has been the most surprising?
I have been very surprised to find a large amount of hiking trails and beautiful mountains very near to the campus. Originally, I had assumed Hong Kong to be mostly well developed, with little natural spaces. However, it is quite possible to lose yourself in the mountains on one of the several long-distance trails.
Can you tell us about some of the sites you’ve seen/places you have visited?
My favorites so far have been Sharp, Ma On Shan, and Kowloon peaks all providing amazing views. Another favorite was Mui Wo on Lantau Island, where I went mountain biking. There are many very fun trails there.

What was the food like? What was your favorite local dish?
Food in Hong Kong consists of many kinds of fresh seafood which has been very interesting. A favorite so far has been the dumplings.
What’s one thing you know now that you wish you knew before you left?
I wish I had done more research about the area, learning about what there is to see nearby before I got here.
Where would you like to travel next?
I would like to explore mainland China, likely Beijing and Shanghai.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone about to apply for a Gilman Scholarship, what would it be?
I would advise a person to emphasize their unique experiences and background in their Gilman application. They would like a diverse group of scholars that represent many different slices of America.
Editor’s Note: The current round of Gilman applications are due on March 6, 2025.
