Renowned international education journalist Karin Fischer will deliver the keynote address at Lehigh University’s International Education Week, exploring how global politics and globalization are shaping the future of higher education
One of the most prominent international education reporters in the nation will deliver the keynote address during Lehigh University’s International Education Week (IEW) events this month.
Karin Fischer, senior writer with The Chronicle of Higher Education, will deliver keynote remarks on Nov. 19, discussing how global politics are shaping international education and the impact of globalization on higher education.
Her keynote remarks are among several events planned for International Education Week from Nov. 18 to 22. IEW is an annual initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education celebrating the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
“It’s a great honor to welcome Karin Fischer to Lehigh University, and very timely as we celebrate International Education Week,” said Cheryl Matherly, Vice President and Vice Provost for International Affairs. “Karin is widely respected for her prescient reporting about international issues impacting US higher education.”
Fischer will speak on Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. at Linderman 200. The title of her talk will be "Globalization's Impact on Education: Insights from a Leading Journalist."
She will also spend the day at Lehigh University, receiving a tour of the campus, engaging with officials from the Office of International Affairs (OIA), and meeting with Lehigh President Joseph J. Helble ‘82.
She writes about international education, including American colleges’ activities overseas, the globalization of the college experience, study abroad, and more. She has worked for The Chronicle of Higher Education for about 20 years, and also publishes a popular weekly newsletter on global education called Latitudes.
Her reporting has appeared on NPR and in such publications as The New York Times, EdSource, and the Washington Monthly. Described as “one of the most astute observers of international higher education,” she is also a research associate at the Center for Studies in Higher Education at the University of California, Berkeley.
Fischer is an international education leadership fellow at the State University of New York at Albany, and is a recipient of the East-West Center’s Jefferson Fellowship for reporting in Asia and the International Reporting Project fellowship. Her work has been honored by the Education Writers Association, the National Press Foundation, and the Poynter Institute.
