The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced significant changes to federal immigration policies, specifically moving from an open-ended "Duration of Status" to a fixed "Duration of Stay" framework for international students and scholars on F-1 and J-1 visas.
We understand that news of federal policy shifts can create uncertainty and concern. We are writing to provide immediate context and to emphasize that Lehigh University remains committed to ensuring our international students can earn their degrees and continue to achieve their academic goals.
As we navigate this transition, please keep the following key points in mind:
- Lehigh is Prepared: Our leadership and the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) have been actively monitoring these developments for several months and are preparing guidance and resources to ensure our community is supported throughout this process.
- Implementation is Not Immediate: Based on current federal guidance, these changes do not take effect today. There is a 60-day transition period following the publication of the final rule before new requirements are fully implemented.
- Academic Continuity Remains: While the rule may introduce new administrative procedures and fixed timelines, international students are still able to study and complete their degrees at Lehigh. OIA and OISS are working with faculty and staff to provide resources to support a smooth transition and ensure continued student success.
- Ongoing Support: OISS has extensive experience navigating complex immigration landscapes. They will be providing direct support, including detailed FAQs and information sessions, to help students and scholars manage any new administrative requirements.
The Office of International Students and Scholars will share targeted guidance with specific student and scholar populations to address their unique needs and timelines. As we navigate this transition, we encourage all community members to avoid making decisions based on rumors or incomplete information. Please visit the Duration of Status Rule Change resource page for the most up-to-date information and answers to frequently asked questions. If you have specific or urgent questions, contact intnl@lehigh.edu.
The university remains deeply committed to fostering a welcoming, globally engaged environment. We will continue to advocate for and support our international students and scholars as they pursue their academic and research excellence here.
