United Nations Under-Secretary-General Amandeep Gill will visit Lehigh University for a Sept. 2 presentation exploring the future of artificial intelligence and the education and infrastructure needed to realize its promise.
Amandeep Gill, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technologies, will visit Lehigh University next week for a presentation about artificial intelligence.
Under-Secretary-General Gill's presentation will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at UC 375. It is titled "What Kind of Education and Infrastructure Do We Need to Realize AI's Promise?"

Under-Secretary-General Gill will be interviewed by Provost Nathan Urban. This event is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the LU/UN Partnership. Attendance is free to the Lehigh community.
The U.N. Secretary-General appointed Under-Secretary-General Gill to lead tech initiatives in 2022. He spearheads global digital cooperation, AI governance, and implementation of the Global Digital Compact.
A thought leader on digital technology, he brings to the position a deep knowledge of digital technologies coupled with a solid understanding of how to leverage the digital transformation responsibly and inclusively for progress on the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Under-Secretary-General Gill is visiting campus as the keynote speaker in the Lehigh University/United Nations Partnership Ambassadorial Series. More than 30 Ambassadors to the United Nations have presented to the Lehigh community in support of this global programming initiative.
Previously, he was the Executive Director and Co-Lead of the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation from 2018 to 2019. He also helped secure high-impact international consensus recommendations on regulating AI in lethal autonomous weapon systems in 2017 and 2018, and helped draft UNESCO’s AI ethics recommendation in 2020.
Under-Secretary-General Gill was India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva from 2016 to 2018. He joined his country’s Diplomatic Service in 1992 and served in various capacities involving disarmament, strategic technologies, and international security affairs, with postings in Tehran and Colombo.
Under-Secretary-General Gill holds a PhD in Nuclear Learning in Multilateral Forums from King’s College London, a Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Electrical Communications from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and an Advanced Diploma in French History and Language from Geneva University.
