The Office of International Students and Scholars will be open December 27-30. To see events planned during this time, visit the Global Gatherings webpage.

During that time, other OIA offices will be open, with staff working remotely. This includes the vice president's office, Global Citizenship Center, Global Partnerships and Strategic Initiatives, Iacocca Institute, Iacocca International Internships and International Center for Academic and Professional English. The Office of Fellowship Advising and UN Programs will be closed December 27-30.

Dr. Werner Obermeyer is Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) office at UN Headquarters in New York. His portfolio includes the promotion of health in the General Assembly and other inter-governmental bodies and processes, the WHO’s relations with the UN system entities based in New York, as well as non-governmental organizations that focus on public health. He was responsible for the negotiations which culminated in adoption of the 2011, 2014 and 2018 Political Declarations on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, the 2016 Political Declaration on Anti-Microbial Resistance, the 2018 Political Declaration on Tuberculosis, the 2019 Political Declaration on Universal Health Coverage, and the 2022 Political Declaration on Road Safety.

He oversees initiatives related to the sustainable development goals, global health and foreign policy, universal health coverage, health security and social protection, road safety, malaria, NCDs, climate change and health, disabilities, narcotics and drugs, mental health and tobacco control. Prior to joining the World Health Organization he was the representative of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) in New York, responsible for environmental governance, health determinants and sustainable development. Before joining the United Nations he served in the South African Foreign Service, holding various senior diplomatic assignments.

The Global Citizenship Education Conference invites us back into the ear and, specifically, to listening as a way to restore some balance.

The pandemic, war, mass shootings and racism of recent times have left everyone reeling and searching for ways to reestablish their balance in a world at times unrecognizable. As we know, our ability to balance is something we find not in our e-calendars or even our activism, but through our ears. As we seek a more stable positioning between the dizzying highs and lows of experiencing world-as-a-mess and then returning to our more hopeful commitments, perhaps we would be well-served to begin in the auditory realm.

This conference is widely open to academics, non-profit professionals, educators, activists, artists, poets and those in between... Our speakers will present a variety of ideas around listening in intimate and global arenas. There will be ample space for engagement and conversation.

The inaugural Iacocca Leadership Speaker is Sylvia Acevedo, a trailblazing entrepreneur, business leader and engineer who started her career working in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and most recently served as CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA.

The Iacocca Leadership Speaker Series honors auto industry icon Lee Iacocca’s legacy of leadership, tenacity, and social responsibility, and his commitment to supporting international education.

Acevedo will join Richard Verma ’90, former U.S. ambassador to India and Lehigh trustee, to share what she’s learned as a leader in industries as varied as science, government, big tech and education; how she’s working to increase access for women and those of diverse backgrounds; and why she thinks it’s important to cultivate a global outlook.

The event is part of Founder's Weekend, an annual campus celebration commemorating Lehigh University founder Asa Packer. It is free and open to the public. Attendees can register in advance through the Founder’s Weekend website.
