R. Kevin Grigsby, MSW, DSW served as a faculty member, administrator, leader, and scholar in academic medicine and science until his retirement from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). For more than a decade, he served as Senior Director, AAMC Member Organizational Development. He and his team served as the primary source of expertise regarding the assessment of organizational culture and its consequences in academic medicine and science. A hallmark of his career includes helping medical school leaders to develop a future-oriented perspective regarding their organizations. He has been engaged by many North American medical schools for his expertise regarding change management strategies for improving organizational culture, the learning environment, and organizational performance. These efforts include improving organizational diversity and inclusion and promoting equity in the distribution of resources, opportunities, and rewards. He is a trusted source of scholarship regarding organizational culture and its consequences at medical schools and academic health systems. Grigsby is the author of over 100 journal articles, book chapters, and books. Grigsby and his AAMC colleague William T. Mallon, EdD, co-authored the AAMC Successful Medical School Department Chair series. The three-volume set includes Leading: Top Skills, Attributes, and Behaviors Critical for Success (2016), Recruiting: Proven Search and Hiring Practices for the Best Talent (2017), and Thriving: New Perspectives and Approaches for Personal and Organizational Success (2020.) He advocates for promoting faculty and staff participation in organizational decision-making processes and has been instrumental in creating and leading career development programs for interim leaders, aspiring leaders, associate deans, and department chairs. Prior to joining the AAMC Grigsby served as a faculty member at Yale School of Medicine, the Medical College of Georgia where he served as Professor Psychiatry and Health Behavior and Vice Dean for Research and Administration, and Penn State College of Medicine where he served as Professor of Psychiatry and Vice Dean for Faculty and Administrative Affairs from 2000-2009.
In addition to his expansive knowledge of LCME accredited medical schools, Dr. Grigsby brings specialized knowledge of osteopathic medical education, research, and service from his comprehensive review of more than two decades of research funded by The Osteopathic Heritage Foundations. While serving as Senior Director, Member Organizational Development at the Associate of American Medical Colleges, Grigsby and his team were retained to analyze the impact of osteopathic biomedical research at every college of osteopathic medicine in the USA.
