Statement from Director on Recent World Events

July 16, 2016

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

We are deeply saddened by recent world events and understand that the current climate may add additional stress for our students traveling around the world and their families.  We take student safety and security very seriously. A dedicated team of individuals regularly monitors world events to assess current security conditions in all Lehigh program locations and surrounding areas, as well as responds to emergencies and critical incidents that may happen during the course of a program.

Our pre-departure orientation program includes several discussions on safety, security, and support services.  As a reminder, the following Lehigh resources and support are available to students throughout the Study Abroad experience:

·  International SOS – available 24/7 for consult and emergency response: 1-215-942-8478; Lehigh membership # is 11BYSG000004. Note: collect calls accepted.

·  Lehigh University Counseling center – available 24/7 for counseling and consult: 610-758-3880

·  The Lehigh Study Abroad Office is available during regular business hours at 610-758-3351 or studyabroad@lehigh.edu

·  Lehigh Study Abroad Office on call staff members are available for after-hours emergencies through the University Police at 610-758-4200.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind all travelers about the importance of maintaining vigilance at all times, especially when traveling; when possible avoid large crowds due to potential for increased risk.  Please continue to complete Lehigh's Weekend Travel Plans Survey so that we can know your location in the event of an emergency.  We also encourage you to register weekend/side trips in the U.S. State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so you will receive email alerts from the local U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Please note that our office has already enrolled you with the STEPS program in your study abroad program location.

While we are saddened by the many incidents we have all witnessed over the past weeks, we are committed to partnering with students in promoting their safety. Remain assured that the safety and security of our students is our top priority.

Sincerely,

Katie Radande
